CARNAVAL:Mardi Gras (carnival) Six weeks before
Easter, when the island is totally in the grip of Carnival
Week. Carnival is a time of fun and revelry and provides
a wonderful excuse to escape from monotonous daily routine.
It starts with the competition of the best “Murgas”a
flamboyant and colourful parade of people wearing fantastic
costumes, whistles and drums. Tthe Carnival Queen is
elected in a sensational grand gala and celebrations
end with “El entierro de la sardinas” on
Ash Wednesday.
SAN JUAN-23th to 24th June. Marking the beginning
of sommer hughe bonfires are built around the
island.
CORPUS CHRISTI: Salt was once so important
to the islanders that it played, and still does play,
a major role in the May festival of Corpus Christi on
Lanzarote.All on the island of Lanzarote (but best place
to join is Arrecife), there are carpets made of salt
in elaborate and colourful design all along the roads.
NUESTRA SEÑORA DEL CARMEN
The Fiesta del virgen del Carmen is celebrated throughout
Lanzarote but the focal points are the former capital
of the island, Teguise and the more touristy coastal
areas of Tías, Playa Blanca (Yaiza) and the fishing
village of Caleta de Sebo (on the small island of La
Graciosa).
