Wine: Driving along the "wine
road" in Lanzarote is an exciting experience. The
road is directly bordered by lava fields and vineyards:
a fantastic and unique landscape.
The good grapes of Lanzarote grow here which will become
the Malvasia wine, most suited to the climate..
The whole area is next covered with picon and, finally,
a low semi-circular dry-stone wall is built around the
young plant.
Wines can be tasted in the various Bodegas' and also
bought there. There are small villages along this road
and special tourist places where one can stop and purchase
the wine.
Cheese: The canary islands have
a long standing tradition of goat-breeding, with corresponding
production and consumption of their own fresh and cured
goat cheese.
You can find three types of"Conejero"
cheese (that's the name whic received the cheese of
Lanzarote): natural, oily, and paprika or with gofio
(toasted wheat or corn flour) which gives it a very
characteristic aroma.
"Mojo":Mojo sauce which comes
in several variaties. The usual that you will find are
the "verde" which is green and mild made with
fresh herbs especially corriander which is normally
served with delicious fresh fish like "sama"
and "vieja". Then there is the "rojo"
which is red and is spicier as it is made with chillies
which is normally served with "the papas arrugadas"
a Canary island specialty.
